چکیده

RETINOBLASTOMA is a rare tumour, occurring mainly in infancy and early childhood, and arouses interest whenever it is encountered. This case is of even greater interest because it was found in a girl 81 years old, and even more so because of the unique method in which the diagnosis was established. Retinoblastoma, in the advanced stages, when extra-ocular extension has occurred, may present with swelling of the facial bones and exophthalmos. This may lead to difficulties in differential diagnosis between retinoblastoma and other conditions presenting with similar features in Tropical Africa. The commonest cause of swelling of facial bones and exophthalmos in the local children is, undoubtedly, malignant lymphoma (Burkitt's tumour). Other conditions, which have been observed to present with these features, include neuroblastoma, chloroma due to myeloblastic leukaemia, adamantinoma, epulis, and inflammatory conditions such as mucocele and cancrum oris. The diagnosis in most of these conditions can be established with certainly only by histological examination of a biopsy specimen. This rather cumbersome procedure was avoided by the identification and subsequent tissue culture of the retinoblastoma cells in a sample of cerebrospinal fluid taken from a lumbar puncture. What was even more important was that the result was available within half an hour of performing the lumbar puncture.

DC-SIGN on B Lymphocytes Is Required For Transmission of HIV-1 to T Lymphocytes

Infection of T cells by HIV-1 can occur through binding of virus to dendritic cell (DC)-specific ICAM-3 grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN) on dendritic cells and transfer of virus to CD4+ T cells. Here we show that a subset of B cells in the blood and tonsils of normal donors expressed DC-SIGN, and that this increased after stimulation in vitro with interleukin 4 and CD40 ligand, with enhanced expr...

Role of the Carbohydrate-Binding Sites of Griffithsin in the Prevention of DC-SIGN-Mediated Capture and Transmission of HIV-1

BACKGROUND The glycan-targeting C-type DC-SIGN lectin receptor is implicated in the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by binding the virus and transferring the captured HIV-1 to CD4(+) T lymphocytes. Carbohydrate binding agents (CBAs) have been reported to block HIV-1 infection. We have now investigated the potent mannose-specific anti-HIV CBA griffithsin (GRFT) on its abil...

Capture and transmission of HIV-1 by the C-type lectin L-SIGN (DC-SIGNR) is inhibited by carbohydrate-binding agents and polyanions.

It was recently shown that capture of HIV-1 by DC-SIGN-expressing cells and the subsequent transmission of HIV to CD4+ T-lymphocytes can be prevented by carbohydrate-binding agents (CBAs), whereas polyanions were unable to block virus capture by DC-SIGN. In this study, we could show that a short pre-exposure of HIV-1 to both mannose- and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)-specific CBAs or polyanions ...

Subset of DC-SIGN(+) dendritic cells in human blood transmits HIV-1 to T lymphocytes.

The dendritic cell (DC)-specific molecule DC-SIGN is a receptor for the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 and is essential for the dissemination of HIV-1. DC-SIGN is expressed by DCs, both monocyte-derived DCs and DCs in several tissues, including mucosa and lymph nodes. To identify a DC-SIGN(+) DC in blood that may be involved in HIV-1 infection through blood, we have analyzed the expression o...

Efficient capture of antibody neutralized HIV-1 by cells expressing DC-SIGN and transfer to CD4+ T lymphocytes.

Infection of CD4+ T lymphocytes is enhanced by the capture and subsequent transfer of HIV-1 by dendritic cells (DCs) via the interaction with C-type lectins such as the DC-specific ICAM-grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN). Numerous HIV-1 envelope-directed neutralizing Abs have been shown to successfully block the infection of CD4(+) T lymphocytes. In this study, we find that HIV-1-neutralized with t...

DC-SIGN (dendritic cell-specific ICAM-grabbing non-integrin) and DC-SIGN-related (DC-SIGNR): friend or foe?

C-type lectins are calcium-dependent carbohydrate-binding proteins with a wide range of biological functions, many of which are related to immunity. DC-SIGN (dendritic cell-specific ICAM-grabbing non-integrin, where ICAM is intercellular adhesion molecule) is a recently described mannose-specific C-type lectin expressed by dendritic cells. Dendritic cells are potent antigen-presenting cells cap...
